The Hon. David C. Alexander is a judge for the Cortland County Multi-Bench in the Sixth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench in 2017. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. William Ames (Ret.). Prior to his election to Cortland County, Judge Alexander had served as a town justice for the Town of Cortlandville since 2014.
He is a registered Republican.
Judge Alexander graduated with his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 1995.
He began his legal career as an associate with Williamson, Clune, and Stevens where he practiced briefly beginning in 1997. That same year, Alexander then became an associate at Ruthig, Leonard, and Van Donsel. While with the firm, he also served as an assistant public defender for the Town of Cortlandville.
In 2004, Alexander became an assistant county attorney for the Town of Cortlandville. His legal career also includes a stint as a sole practitioner. During his tenure in solo practice, Alexander served as an Attorney for Children and as the Attorney for the Area Agency on Aging.
His memberships have included the New York State Bar Association, the Cortland County Bar Association, where he served as grievance chair and was vice-president of the Cortland County Magistrates Association.
Judge Alexander was born and raised in Cortland County. His family owned a farm in Cortlandville. Before attending law school, Alexander worked the farm full-time. He has also served as a private pilot since 1979.
