Judge David A. Schroeder - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. David A. Schroeder is a judge for the General Division of the Ashtabula County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary Yost.

Prior to his election, Schroeder sat as a judge for the Western County Court, a position to which he was appointed by former Governor John Kasich on March 18, 2013. During his tenure there, he established innovative and cost-effective programs to address alcohol abuse, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Before that, he was the Law Director for the City of Conneaut (2010 to 2013), where he spearheaded the city’s crackdown on blighted housing.

Schroeder earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Mercyhurst College in 1977. He spent the next few years working for the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department and the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court before completing a J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1981. While in law school, Schroeder sat as a member of the Cleveland Marshall Law Review and received the Outstanding Student of Criminal Law Award.

After graduating from law school, Schroeder entered into private practice, handling criminal, domestic relations, and family law matters as well as administrative agency cases and appeals. He also spent time as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Ashtabula County Prosecutor’s Office (1995 to 1996) and the City of Conneaut (2000 to 2002), an assistant public defender for the Erie County Public Defender’s Office, and an assistant district attorney for the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

Schroeder is a lifelong resident of northwest Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio. He currently resides in Harpersfield Township with his wife, Michele, a retired Chief Probation Officer of the Geauga County Juvenile Court. He is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio (1981) and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (1982).

He is registered as a Republican.
