The Hon. David A. Lowy is an associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts. He was elevated to the position by Governor Charlie Baker in 2016. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert Cordy (Ret.).
At the time, Lowy was serving as an associate justice of the Suffolk County Superior Court, a position to which he was appointed by former Governor Paul Cellucci in 2001. Lowy began his judicial career as an associate justice of the District Court in 1997.
He received a B.A. in history from the University of Massachusetts in 1983. Lowy went on to earn a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1987.
After graduating from law school, Lowy became an associate in the Litigation Department of Goodwin Procter, LLP. The following year, he entered into a clerkship with the Hon. Edward F. Harrington of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts before returning to his position at Goodwin Procter, LLP in 1989.
Lowy left the firm in 1990 and joined the Essex County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney. He remained in that capacity for two years. Lowy then became deputy legal counsel to former Governor William Weld and Lieutenant Governor Paul Cellucci in the Office of the Governor’s Legal Counsel in 1992.
Lowy later joined the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in 1995, where he worked as an assistant district attorney in the Gang Unit. He continued in that position until joining the District Court in 1997.
Lowy also taught as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School, New England Law, and Boston University School of Law.
He served as an editor on the Supreme Judicial Court Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Evidence Law, which resulted in the publication of the Massachusetts Guide to Evidence in 2008.
His memberships included the Massachusetts Bar Association.
Lowy was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
