The Hon. Darlene D. Harris is a judge for the Nassau County District Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was originally elected to the Suffolk County District Court in 2015 and presides in Nassau County.
She is a registered Republican.
Judge Harris received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. She went on to earn her J.D. from Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law in 1989.
After graduating from law school, Harris worked as an attorney with both the New York City and Nassau County Legal Aid Society for two years.
In 1991, she practiced as a senior court attorney for the District Court Law Department. Three years later she served a brief stint as a deputy attorney for the Town of Hempstead before joining the Nassau County Legislature in 1996. While serving as a legislator, Harris entered into solo practice in 1997.
In addition to her law practice, she became an administrative law judge for the New York City Department of Finance in 1999.
Harris served in both positions concurrently until 2010, when she began a four-year tenure as the chairperson of the Nassau County Assessment Review. She was serving in that capacity at the time of her election to the District Court in 2015.
Her memberships have included the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, and the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association.
