Hon. Daniel L. Howsare (Ret.) was a judge for the Bedford County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench on November 5, 1985 and was retained in 1995 and 2005. Howsare retired in July 2010, after which time he presided for ten years as a senior judge.
During his judicial tenure, he served as the president judge for over twenty-five years, holding the distinction of being the longest-serving judge in county history.
Howsare received a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University in 1971. He then worked as a Juvenile Court Probation Officer in Allegheny County while attending law school. He completed a J.D. at Duquesne University School of Law in 1976.
Howsare served in the United States Army Reserve in the 1970s.
Prior to joining the judiciary, he was the District Attorney in Bedford County, a position he had held since 1980. He joined the Bedford County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney in 1976. In addition to his work as a prosecutor, Howsare also worked as a private practice attorney.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Judges Association Ethics Committee.
Howsare was born and raised in Bedford County. He and his wife, Joan, have two children.
