The Hon. Dale A. Drozd is a District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Fresno Division. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in January 2015 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October 2015. He filled the seat vacated by the Hon. Anthony W. Ishii. Prior to his nomination, Judge Drozd was serving as Chief Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, a position he had held since 2011. He was appointed to serve as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of California in 1997.
Judge Drozd graduated magna cum laude with his B.A. from San Diego State University in 1977. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Drozd clerked for the Hon. Lawrence Karlton with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California for two years. Then, after completing his clerkship, Drozd entered into private practice, where he would spend his entire legal career outside of the District Court. He first practiced as an associate at the San Francisco law firm of Hallinan, Osterhoudt, and Poplack beginning in 1982. Four years later he became a named partner at Blackmon, Drozd, and Snellings in Sacramento, California. He was serving in that capacity when he was appointed by the Eastern District Court judges to serve as a magistrate judge in 1997.
He served as past-president of the Criminal Defense Lawyers of Sacramento and for the Christian Brothers High School, where he has also served on the Executive Board. He was a board member of the West Sacramento Little League and also served as a member of Operation Protect and Defend.
