The Hon. Cynthia C. Lie is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 12, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Andrea Bryan.
Lie earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. She then continued her studies at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where she completed her J.D.
She began her legal career as a deputy public defender in the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego County in 1995. Five years later, she briefly left the public sector. She first worked as a litigation associate for Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton in 2000. Then, in 2001, she started her own private practice as a sole practitioner.
Meanwhile, Lie returned to the public sector in 2002, accepting a position in the Office of Citizen Complaints of the City of San Francisco. She worked there as a staff attorney for one year, eventually leaving to join the San Jose Branch of the Office of the Federal Public Defender of the Northern District of California. She served as an assistant public federal defender until her appointment to the bench.
