Judge Craig Smith - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Craig Smith is a justice for the 5th Court of Appeals of Texas. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Prior to his election, Smith was a judge for the 192nd (Civil) District Court in Dallas County, a position to which he was elected in 2006. Before that, he spent twenty-five years as an attorney in private practice.

Smith earned a B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973. Then, in 1976, he completed a J.D. at Texas Tech University School of Law. He is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

His memberships have included the Court Administration Task Force Committee and the Pattern Jury Charge Committee of the State Bar of Texas. He has served as president of the Texas Association of District Judges, and he has sat on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Trial Advocates and AIDS Services of Dallas.

He is a recipient of the Judge of the Year Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates (2008) and the Pro Bono Services Judge of the Year Award from the Dallas Bar Association (2008).

Smith is registered as a Democrat.
