Biography

The Hon. Craig D. Karlan is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in 2002. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Theodore Piatt (Ret.).

Judge Karlan received his bachelor's degree from Yale University, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He went on to earn his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

After graduating from Harvard, Karlan joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office as a deputy district attorney. During his 11 years with the D.A.'s office, Karlan helped prosecute white-collar and violent crimes. He remained with the D.A.'s office until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2002.

He also taught on the subject of white-collar crimes as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University Law School and as a lecturer for the California District Attorney's Association.
