The Hon. Claudia A. Wilken is a senior district judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. She was nominated to the bench by former President Bill Clinton on October 7, 1993, to fill a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. She served as its chief judge from August 23, 2012 to December 16, 2014.
Wilken earned a B.A. from Stanford University in 1971. She then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1975.
She began her legal career as a staff attorney in the Office of the Federal Public Defender of the Northern District of California in 1975.
Three years later, she left the public sector. She worked as an attorney in private practice until 1983, at which time she was selected to serve as a United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
Wilken taught as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law from 1978 to 1984. She also taught as a professor at the New College School of Law from 1980 to 1985.
She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
