Judge Christopher P. Baker - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Christopher P. Baker is an Acting Justice of the Chemung County Supreme Court in the Sixth Judicial District of New York. He was designated to the Supreme Court bench by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York in 2018. Justice Baker was originally elected to serve as a judge for the Chemung County Court in 2017.

He is a registered Republican.

Justice Baker received his B.A. from Le Moyne College in 1991. He went on to earn his J.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1995.

Prior to his election to the County Court, Baker had served for sixteen years as the confidential attorney, counselor, and principal law clerk to the Hon. Judith F. O’Shea, former New York Supreme Court Justice in the Sixth Judicial District beginning in 2000. During his tenure with Justice O’Shea, Baker was also appointed to serve as a hearing officer for the Office of Court Administration within the New York State Unified Court System. In that role, Baker served as a judge tasked with deciding matters involving employee disciplinary and misconduct charges in the State of New York. Baker held both positions concurrently until his election to the County Court bench in 2016.

Before becoming a law clerk, Baker served as a Chemung County assistant district attorney from 1997 to 2000. He was an attorney in private practice prior to joining the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office.

His memberships have included serving as past-president of the Board of Directors for the Sullivan Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

Justice Baker also served as an advisor attorney for the Horseheads High School Mock Trial Team and was a local youth sports coach.

He was born and raised in Elmira, New York.
