Judge Christi J. Acker - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Christi J. Acker is a Justice of the Dutchess County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the bench in 2017.

Justice Acker graduated with her B.A. in history from the College of the Holy Cross in 1989. She went on to earn her J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1992.

After graduating from law school, Acker entered into private practice in 1993. During her tenure in private practice, Acker began working as an associate counsel for the Putnam County Department of Social Services in 1997. While in private practice, her areas of practice included civil, criminal, trusts and estates, employment discrimination, landlord/tenant, and real estate transactions.

She held both positions until 2001 when she became a principal court attorney for the New York State Unified Court System. While there, she would also be elected to serve as a town justice for the Town of Pine Plains in 2008. Acker remained in both positions until being elected to the Supreme Court in 2017. During her time as a principal court attorney, Acker served as a legal advisor to the Hon. James T. Rooney and was also instrumental in assisting in the creation of the Family Treatment and Integrated Domestic Violence Courts. In her role as town justice, Acker presided over misdemeanors, traffic offenses, small claims, summary proceedings, zoning code, and animal enforcement matters.

Some of her memberships have included the Dutchess County Bar Association, the Mid Hudson Women's Bar Association, and the NYS Magistrates Association. Justice Acker has also served as past-president of the Putnam County Bar Association and the Dutchess County Magistrates Association, and he was past-chair of the Pine Plains Conservations Advisory Committee.

Justice Acker began serving as a volunteer judge for the NYSBA Mock Trials in 2010.

In her free time, she enjoys cooking, gardening, and travel.
