Judge Chelsea Baldwin - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Chelsea Baldwin is a commissioner for the Cowlitz County Superior Court in Washington. She joined the bench as a part-time commissioner in 2010.

In addition, Baldwin has sat as a pro tem judge for the Cowlitz County District Court.

She received a B.A. in law and justice from the University of Washington in 2002. Baldwin then completed a J.D. at Gonzaga University School of Law in 2005.

After law school, she worked as an intern for the Cowlitz County Superior Court before accepting a position at Walstead Mertsching, PS. Joining as an associate, Baldwin was quickly promoted to partner in the firm three years later, becoming the first female partner in the firm’s history. During her time in private practice, she has gained casework experience in Federal Court, Courts of Appeal, Superior Court and District Court and has handled family law, landlord-tenant, criminal, dependency (foster care), at-risk youth and mental health matters.

Baldwin sat for several years on the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Legal Aid Board and was a member of the Access to Justice Committee.

In addition, she is a Washington Leadership Institute Fellow and a Washington Judicial Institute Fellow.

Her civic involvement has included the Cowlitz County Search and Rescue and the Cowlitz Civilian Emergency Response Team. Baldwin is also a member of the board of Three Rivers Christian School.

She was named Attorney of the Year by the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Legal Aid (2010) and is a recipient of the National President’s Volunteer Service Award (2016).

Baldwin was raised in Longview, the daughter of a local orthodontist. She is married to fellow attorney, Joshua Baldwin, and they have three children. An outdoor enthusiast, Baldwin enjoys snow skiing, camping, and hiking in her free time.
