The Hon. Charles S. Crompton is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 12, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Katherine A. Feinstein.
Crompton earned a B.A. from Columbia University. He then received a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1988.
Crompton began his legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Jane R. Roth of the United States District Court for the District of Delaware.
Then, in 1989, he entered private practice. He joined McCutchen, Doyle, Brown, and Enersen as an associate, specializing in intellectual property and antitrust litigation. He spent ten years with the firm, eventually becoming a partner. Crompton then moved to Latham and Watkins in 1999, where he worked as a litigation partner in the firm’s intellectual property practice, technology transactions practice, and antitrust and competition practice.
Crompton left Latham and Watkins in 2014. He began working full-time as the legal director of the Glide Foundation, a position he held until his appointment to the bench.
Crompton has served on the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluations of the State Bar of California. He has also served on the board of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area.
He was awarded the President’s Pro Bono Service Award by the State Bar of California.
Crompton is registered as a Democrat.
