The Hon. Cathy Ann Bencivengo is a District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. She was nominated by President Barack Obama in May 2011 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in February 2012. She filled the seat vacated by the Hon. Jeffrey T. Miller.
Judge Bencivengo graduated with her B.A. in political science and journalism (1980) and her M.A. in political science (1981) from Rutgers University. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1988.
After graduating from law school, Bencivengo began her legal career in private practice. She joined the erstwhile law firm Gray, Cary, Ames, and Fry as an associate in 1988 and was named a partner in 1996. She remained with the firm, which became DLA Piper US LLP, until 2005. During her time in private practice, she specialized in intellectual property litigation and served as the co-chair of the firm's Patent Litigation practice.
In 2005, Bencivengo was selected to serve as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. She would hold that position until her nomination to the federal bench in 2011.
Judge Bencivengo was born in Teaneck, New Jersey.
