Biography

The Hon. Catherine A. Mauzy is a judge for the 419th District Court in Travis County, Texas. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2018, and re-elected in 2022.

Prior to her election, Mauzy was a partner at Mauzy & Tucker, a law firm she joined in 2011. Over the course of her legal career, Mauzy devoted thousands of pro bono hours to cause-oriented litigation. For example, she sat as legal counsel on Goodfriend v. DeBeauvoir, which resulted in a court ruling that allowed the marriage of the first same-sex couple in Texas.

Mauzy earned a B.A. in liberal arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983. Then, in 1987, she completed a J.D. at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. She is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

After graduating from law school, Mauzy began her legal career with the Travis County Attorney’s Office. She served in that capacity for four years, eventually leaving in order to enter into private practice at Barrett Whitworth & Mauzy. During her tenure there, she also opened her own private practice as a sole practitioner.

Her memberships have included the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists and the Travis County Family Law Advocates. She has also served as director, treasurer, vice chair, and chair of the Family Law Section of the Travis County Bar Association.

She is a recipient of the Litigation Attorney Award (2011) from the Travis County Women Lawyers Association.

Mauzy was raised in Texas. Her father, Oscar Mauzy, was elected to the Texas State Senate as well as the Texas Supreme Court. She currently lives in the Shoal Creek Neighborhood of Austin. Her partner, an immigrant from Sweden, works as a solar-energy engineer.

She is registered as a Democrat.
