Biography

The Hon. Carolyn B. Kuhl is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 1995 by former Governor Pete Wilson.

She is a registered Republican.

Judge Kuhl graduated cum laude from Princeton University with her B.A. in chemistry in 1974. She went on to earn her J.D. with honors from Duke Law School in 1977. While at Duke, Kuhl served as the editor of the Duke Law Journal.

After graduating from law school, Kuhl began a clerkship with the Hon. Anthony Kennedy, former justice of the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

Then in 1978 Kuhl joined the Los Angeles law firm of Munger, Tolles, and Olson where she practiced until 1981.

She left LA to become a Deputy Attorney Solicitor General for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. While at the DOJ, Kuhl would go on to become a Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division and then ultimately would be named the Special Assistant to then-Attorney General William French Smith. During her five years with the DOJ, Kuhl argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Some of which involved arguing against abortion rights, which would become a hot-button issue later in her career.

After leaving the DOJ in 1986, Kuhl returned to Los Angeles to rejoin the law firm of Munger, Tolles, and Olson as a partner. She remained with the firm until her appointment to the Superior Court in 1995. Her area of practice at the firm centered on corporate law.

During her time on the bench, Judge Kuhl was elected to serve as assistant presiding judge for a two-year term from 2012 to 2014. She also served as a supervising judge for the Civil Division as well as served on the Superior Court's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.

In 2001 President George W. Bush nominated Judge Kuhl for a position on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. It was speculated that her party affiliation, as well as her prior arguments before the Supreme Court, led the Democratic-controlled Congress to not approve her nomination.

Judge Kuhl has taught civil procedure in practice as an adjunct professor at UCLA School of Law.

She has served on numerous professional organizations throughout her career.
