The Hon. Carlos Varela is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown on October 11, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lisa Schall.
Varela earned a B.A. in political science and government from the University of California, San Diego. He then received a J.D. from the California Western School of Law.
He began his legal career as a deputy district attorney with the Office of the District Attorney of San Diego County. He served in this capacity for twenty years, eventually becoming Chief of the South Bay Division in 2018.
Varela was a resident of Chula Vista, California at the time of his appointment.
He is registered as a Democrat.
