The Hon. Bunmi O. Awoniyi is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former Governor Jerry Brown.
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Awoniyi, whose family was originally from Nigeria, was born and raised in England. She attended the University of Essex School of Law in England, where she graduated with her LL.B. in 1986. She received her LL.M. from Leicester University School of Law in 1987 and her J.D. from the Inns of the Court, School of Law in 1988.
After she graduated from law school, Awoniyi became a crown prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service in London, which serves as the public prosecution agency for criminal matters in England and Wales. She remained in that position for one year.
After immigrating to the United States, Awoniyi served a clerkship at the Law Offices of D. Kapp Nees in 1990. After completing her clerkship, Awoniyi briefly served as an associate for the Law Office of Brady and Kent in 1992 and for the Law Office of Steven L. Wessels in 1993. Then, in 1994, she became a sole practitioner, opening the Law Office of Bunmi Awoniyi, where she would practice family law and immigration and naturalization law for the next eighteen years. She is certified as a Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California. She remained in solo practice until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2012.
Besides being a member of her state and local Bar Associations, Awoniyi also served as past-president of the Wiley Manuel Bar Association.
She taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Northern California, Lorenzo Patino School of Law.
During her time on the bench, Judge Awoniyi has served as the Supervising Family Law Judge.
