Biography

The Hon. Bruce E. Chan is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on June 11, 2009.

Chan earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1978. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1981.

Chan began his legal career as a trial attorney with the Office of the San Francisco Public Defender. He was promoted to senior trial attorney in 1989, a position he held for the next ten years. Then, from 1999 to 2004, Chan served as counsel and chief counsel for the California State Assembly’s Committee on Public Safety.

Chan was appointed as a commissioner for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in 2004. He served in this position until his appointment to the bench in 2009.

Chan is a fourth-generation San Franciscan. His father owned and managed an auto-parts store in the city. Chan, however, spent much of his time in New Hampshire, where he attended St. Paul’s School.

He is registered as a Democrat.
