The Hon. Beth A. R. McGowen is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. C. Randall Schneider.
McGowen earned a B.A. from Brigham Young University. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1990.
She began her legal career with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen in 1990. She started as a litigation associate, eventually advancing to partner. Then, in 2002, she left the firm to join Bingham McCutchen as a partner, a position she held until her appointment to the bench. Over the course of her legal career, she handled intellectual property, healthcare, general commercial, and trade secret cases for clients as diverse as Sun Microsystems and Stanford University.
She has served on the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Law Foundation. She has also served on the Women Lawyers Committee of the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
McGowen is registered as a Republican.
