The Hon. Bernard G. Skomal is a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, San Diego Division. He was appointed to the District Court in 2010.
Judge Skomal received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross. He went on to earn his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.
While in law school, Skomal served as an intern with the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. Then, after graduating law school, he was hired to work there full-time. During his tenure with Federal Defenders, Skomal litigated immigration, narcotics, complex conspiracy, fraud, organized crime, and tax offense cases.
Then, in 1989, Skomal entered into solo practice, where he specialized in criminal defense. He was subsequently certified by the State Bar of California as a Criminal Law Specialist.
Skomal was named a Top Attorney in Criminal Defense in 2008 and 2009 by the San Diego Daily Transcript.
Judge Skomal is fluent in Spanish.
