The Hon. Benjamin F. Coats is a judge for the Ventura County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 22, 2017. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Colleen Toy White (Ret.).
He is registered without party preference.
He received his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1982. He earned his J.D. from John F. Kennedy University School of Law in 1987. Coats then went on to earn an M.C.R.P. from California Polytechnic State University in 1996.
Coats legal career began at Early Maslach in 1989, where he practiced as an attorney for five years. He left the firm in 1994 to become a planning consultant for the Rogoway Planning Group in San Luis Obispo. He also worked concurrently as an associate at the law firm of Belsher and Becker. Then, in 1998, Coats joined Engle and Bride, where he practiced as an associate, until being made a partner in 2005. He had been a partner at Engle, Carobini, and Coats for eleven years at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2018. During his time in private practice, Coats specialized in civil litigation and insurance defense, with an emphasis on medical and dental malpractice cases.
