Biography

The Hon. Barry P. Goode (Ret.) served as a judge on the Superior Court of Contra Costa County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis on November 11, 2003. He retired in 2018.

Goode received his bachelor's degree in political science from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He then earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1972.

He began his legal career as a special assistant to the United States Senator Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois in 1972. Then, in 1974, he relocated to California, where he accepted a position with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen. During his twenty-seven year tenure there, he specialized in environmental law and complex litigation, eventually rising to partner.

In 2001 Goode left the private sector, as he was selected to serve as the legal affairs secretary for Governor Gray Davis. He held this position until his appointment to the bench.

As a judge for the Superior Court, Goode has presided over its family and criminal law divisions. He has also served as its assistant presiding judge as well as its presiding judge.

Goode has served on the Trial Court Presiding Judges Advisory Committee, the Trial Court Budget Advisory Committee, the Blue Ribbon Panel of Experts on Arbitration Ethics, the Elkins Family Law Task Force, the Access and Fairness Advisory Committee, and the Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee. He has also been a member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers of Northern California, the Board of Directors of the California Supreme Court Historical Society, and the American Law Institute.

He has taught environmental law as an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco Law School.

Goode was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by President Bill Clinton in 1998. However, his nomination stalled under a Republican-controlled Senate.

He is married with two children.

Goode is registered as a Democrat.
