Judge Barry K. Stevens - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Barry K. Stevens is the assistant administrative judge for Civil Matters with the Fairfield Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Lowell Weicker in 1994.

During his judicial tenure, Stevens has also held an assignment in the Ansonia-Milford Judicial District and was the presiding judge on the Bridgeport Juvenile Docket and the Waterbury Complex Litigation Docket (2006 to 2010).

Prior to joining the judiciary, he had worked as a private practice attorney since 1986. Before that, Stevens spent eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office (1978 to 1986). As such, Stevens was Chief of the Financial Litigation Unit.

Over the course of his legal career, he handled federal and state court cases involving personal injury, civil rights, medical malpractice, bankruptcy, and commercial disputes.

He has also taught as a faculty member of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. As such, Stevens has lectured in the First Year Program and the Public Policy and Law Program. In addition, he has taught as an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University School of Law.

Stevens received a B.A. in psychology and social relations from Harvard University in 1975. He went on to complete a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1978.

He was admitted to practice in Connecticut (1978), the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (1979), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (1981).
