Biography

The Hon. Autumn D. Spaeth is a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Southern Division. She was appointed to the District Court in 2018. She filled the seat vacated by the Hon. Vijay C. Gandhi.

Judge Spaeth graduated with her B.A. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1996. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law and her M.A. in communication management from USC's Annenberg School of Communication in 2000.

Outside of the bench, Spaeth spent her legal career in private practice. She first practiced as an associate at McDermott, Will, and Emery before later joining the erstwhile firm Albert, Weiland, and Golden in the same capacity. Spaeth would become a partner at the firm, which became Weiland, Golden, Smiley, Wang, Ekvall, and Strok LLP. Prior to her appointment to the District Court, she was serving as the founding partner of Smiley Wang-Ekvall LLP. During her tenure in private practice, Spaeth specialized in bankruptcy cases as well as business, commercial, and intellectual property disputes.

Some of her professional committees and conferences have included the Ninth Circuit Conference Executive Committee, the chair of the Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative Coordinating Committee, and the program chair for the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. She has also served as co-chair of the Central District's Lawyer Representatives to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference.

Her memberships have included the Board of Directors for the Orange County Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association of Orange County.
