Biography

The Hon. Anthony W. Ishii is a District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Fresno Division. He was nominated by President Bill Clinton in February 1997 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October 1997. He filled the seat vacated by the late Hon. Robert E. Coyle (deceased). Judge Ishii served as Chief Judge of the Eastern District from 2008 to 2012. He assumed senior status in October 2012. At the time of his confirmation in 1997, Judge Ishii held the distinction of being the first Asian Pacific American to be seated on the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California.

Judge Ishii received his A.S. from Reedley Junior College in 1966. He graduated with his Pharm.D. in 1970 from the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy. He then earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1973.

Prior to receiving his confirmation to the Eastern District Court, Ishii had served as a Central Valley Municipal Court judge in Fresno County since 1994. Before that, he was a justice court judge for the county's Parlier-Selma Judicial District for ten years.

Prior to becoming a judge, Ishii worked in private practice from 1979 to 1983. He also served a brief stint as a deputy public defender with the Fresno County Public Defender's Office in 1979 and another brief stint as a deputy city attorney with the Sacramento City Attorney's Office in 1975.

Judge Ishii received the President's Award from the Asian Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento in 2013.

He was born in Santa Ana, California.
