The Hon. Annabelle G. Cortez is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former Governor Jerry Brown. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John P. Shook (Ret.).
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Cortez received her B.A. from the University of California, San Diego. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1995.
After graduating from law school in 1995, Cortez began a clerkship at Marcos Camacho Law Corporation in Bakersfield. She became an attorney for the firm after her clerkship and practiced there from 1995 to 2007 where she was eventually named a managing attorney.
Then in 2007 Cortez served as counsel for one year at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) at their Los Angeles headquarters. The organization fights for the legal and civil rights for the Latino community. In that same year, she became an attorney for the Administrative Office of the Courts where she remained until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2012.
