Biography

The Hon. Andrew Y.S. Cheng is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 1, 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John Dearman.

Cheng earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University. He then received a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1992.

Cheng began his legal career as a law clerk for a federal district court judge. He then practiced law in the private sector for the next two years, all before joining the Office of the City Attorney of San Francisco in 1997. As a deputy city attorney, Cheng litigated against the tobacco industry, achieving a $500 million settlement that resulted in the renovation of Laguna Honda Hospital.

Cheng joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California in 2003. He worked as an assistant U.S. attorney, eventually becoming the deputy chief of its Civil Division in 2006.

Cheng has served as President of the California Asian Pacific American Judges Association and as Master of the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court. He has also been a member of the Asian American Bar Association and the Mechanics Institute Library and Chess Club.

Cheng is the son of Chinese immigrants. He was raised in the Midwest during the 1970s and 1980s. He is an elder of the Old First Presbyterian Church.

Cheng is registered as a Democrat.
