Judge Andrea Watt McHugh - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Andrea Watt McHugh is a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Sarasota County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Andrew Owens, Jr.

The 12th Judicial Circuit includes DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties.

Prior to her appointment, McHugh was chief of the Felony Division with the Office of the State Attorney for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit. McHugh, who joined the office in 2005, also worked in the Capital Sexual Battery Division. She held assignments in both Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

She received a B.A. from the University of Iowa. McHugh went on to complete a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law.

After graduating from law school, McHugh practiced as an attorney with the Law Offices of Lobeck and Hanson, P.A. She has also taught at the Criminal Justice Academy at Suncoast Technical College.

McHugh chaired the State and Public Affairs Committee for the Junior League of Sarasota, and she was a membership chair of the Judge John M. Scheb Inn of Court. She has also served on the Sarasota County Bar Association's Local Professionalism Panel, and she was president of the Children's Guardian Fund.
