Judge Alicia M. Burton - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Alicia M. Burton is a judge for the Pierce County Superior Court in Washington. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Jay Inslee in 2020. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Hickman (Ret.).

Burton received a B.A. in English and pre-law from Washington State University in 1996. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Washington School of Law in 1999.

She began her legal career at the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, where she worked until her appointment to the judiciary. During her twenty-year career as a deputy prosecuting attorney, Burton held assignments in the Civil, Criminal, and Appellate Divisions and was assistant chief of the Juvenile Division.

In addition to her work there, she served as a judge pro tempore in the Thurston County District Court.

Her memberships included the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association, the Washington State Bar Association, the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, and the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers.

An active member of her community, Burton has served on the Board of Directors of The Journey Fund and the Junior League of Tacoma (past president). She also served as a pro bono attorney for Tacomaprobono’s legal aid program.

She was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department in 2018.

Burton, a native Washingtonian, graduated from Sumner High School.
