Biography

The Hon. Alexander F. MacKinnon is a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division. He was appointed to the District Court in 2015. He filled the seat vacated by the retirement of the Hon. Victor B. Kenton (Ret.).

Judge MacKinnon graduated with his B.S.E. in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1977. After graduating from college, MacKinnon worked as a civil engineer before attending law school. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981.

Prior to his appointment to the District Court, MacKinnon had spent his entire legal career at the law firm Kirkland and Ellis LLP. He first joined the firm as an associate in 1982 and was serving as a partner with the firm at the time of his appointment to the District Court in 2015. During his tenure at Kirkland and Ellis, MacKinnon specialized in intellectual property cases as well as antitrust, securities, product liability, and environmental matters.

Before joining the firm, MacKinnon served a clerkship with the Hon. Albert J. Engel, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
