Petterson You recall the uncomfortable aspects of a recent article by Bowling Green University on "Asbestosform Impurities in Conu11ercial 'I'alcum Powders" . As you decided, we instructed the Colorado School to take appropriate steps to advise Bowling Green where and how they had erred. You will be pleased to hear that the Colorado men were very successful in accomplishing the delicate task of getting Bowling Green to admit they overlooked many scientific errors in their entire study. We will continue to push for a recheck of the samples and a republication as required. h1 • Ashton ~~A/nun Enc. cc: R. A. Fuller A. Goudie G. Hildick-Smith D. D. Johnston R. N. Hiller R. J. A paper entitled "Asbestosforrn Impurities in Commercial Talcum Powders," published in the January 1972 issue of The Compass of Sigrna Gamma ·Epsilon (Vol. 49, No. 2) stated that 18 commercial talcum powders exam- ined contained from 4o/o to 46% asbestiform m.inera1s. The average asbesti- form content was 18%. The data in this paper has subsequently been quoted and has been a source of inquiry by interested individuals both in and outside of governrnent agencies. The amount of aslJestiform minerals reported is so large that the data could initiate costly FDA hearings on the matter. Since our general observations at the Hesearch Institute relative to asbestiform. m.inerals in talc are at such a large variance to those reported in the paper, an investigation of the paper was lmdertaken. To date we have revievvecl the paper and have discussed the data with the aunwrs. The people involved in the investigation were \V. T. Caneer and Dr. Jerry K.rause of the Research Institute and Dr. Maynard Slaughter of the Colorado School of Mines. REVIEW OF THE PAPEH A review of the paper suggested that a number of errors are present. Some of these apparent errors may be illustrateq by the follo\ving table \vhich appeared in the paper: · JNJAZ55_000001871 Protected Document--Subject to Protective Order FILED: NEW ULSTER YORK COUNTY COUNTY CLERK CLERK 01/26/2023 09/03/2019 06:06 06:12 PMPM INDEX NO. 190374/2016 EF2021-3098 NYSCEF . According to this table, asbes tiform l!linerals were identified by X- ray dif- fraction. By the method of X-ray diffraction used, one could only expect to identify mineral groups to which asbestiform mirierals belong. Numerous common non-asbestiform minerals also occur in these groups. A differentiation is shown for trernolite-actinolite and anthophyllite. It is not likely that these minerals could be differentiated by the X-ray methods used. The mineral anhydrite (CaS0.1} is also reported by X-ray diffraction for all e·xc:ept three o£ the samples. \Vc have never found anhydri~e in any talc sam- ples examined at the Hesearch Institute. Furthermore, from the standpoint of geological occurrences and rocl;: genesis, one would not expect to find anhydrite associated with talc. With these bcto1·s in m.ind, a study was made to determine how one may possibly mal<.e an identification of anhydrite in talc. A fi.lter is used to screen out k-beta radiation in X-ray diffraction analysis. Ho·wever, the filter is not 100% ---- .. ·~----· efficient and some of the k-beta passes through the filter and can lead to ·.....;.,_... erroneous interpretation. The table also sho·ws serpentine as one of the asbestiform minerals identified by X- ray diffraction for rnost of the samples. This is usually based on the occurrence of a ?-angstrom peak. Ho1vever, chlorite also gi\res a ?-angstrom peak and chlorite is a common constituent of talc. A differentiation of the t\vo minerals can usually be made based on other diffraction pcal-;-.s. Since chlorite is a common constituent of talc and none was reported for the 18 samples, it . is likely that chlorite was misidentified as serpentine.
