Hon. Steven L. Barrett (Ret.) was an acting Justice of the Bronx County Supreme Court, Criminal Term, in the Twelfth Judicial District of New York. He was first appointed to the position by the Chief Administrative Judge in 1985 and was later reappointed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2009. After his reappointment, Barrett was certificated to the seat for multiple terms. As a result of budget cuts, Barrett retired in October 2020.
He began his judicial career as a judge for the Kings County Criminal Court in 1983 and was appointed to the New York County Criminal Court the following year. Then, in 1985, Barrett was assigned to the Bronx County Criminal Court, where he remained until his appointment to the Bronx County Supreme Court later that same year.
Barrett received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University. He then completed a J.D. at Harvard Law School.
Before becoming a judge, Barrett served as an appellate attorney for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and was also an attorney for the Legal Aid Society.
