Biography

The Hon. Jaya K. Madhavan (Ret.) is a former judge for the Housing Court of the City of New York in Bronx County. He was appointed to the bench by former Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 2004.


Madhavan was reappointed to the Housing Part in Bronx County by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau in 2009 and by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti in 2014.


During his tenure on the Housing Court, he helped launch the Senior Homelessness Prevention Project in conjunction with BronxWorks in 2014, which assisted senior citizens in paying their rent as well as providing them with financial counseling. Madhavan was appointed supervising judge of the Bronx Housing Court by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 2007.


He received a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University. Madhavan then completed a J.D. at Pace University, Elisabeth Haub School of Law.


Prior to his judicial career, he was a staff attorney in the Community Law Offices of the Legal Aid Society since 1998. Madhavan also previously held the position for two years beginning in 1995. He also worked as an associate at Himmelstein, McConnell, Gribben & Donahue (1997 to 1998).


Following his retirement from the bench, Madhavan became a court attorney referee for the Monroe County Supreme Court in the 7th Judicial District.
