Judge Betsy Alvarez-Zane: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Betsy Alvarez-Zane is a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court in Florida. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2018.

Prior to her election, Alvarez-Zane was a sole practitioner in her own private practice, a law firm she opened in 2014. She supplemented her practice with service as general counsel to ZaneAir (2015 to 2018). Before that, she was a senior attorney in the Law Offices of Jose A. Dapena (2013 to 2014).

Alvarez-Zane earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, religion, and psychology (1984) and a master’s degree in law and economics (1988) from the University of Miami. She also completed a J.D. (1987) and an LL.M. in real estate and land development (1993) from the University of Miami School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Alvarez-Zane entered into private practice, specializing in insurance defense, family law, bankruptcy, and real property litigation. She started as an attorney in the Law Office of Jorge De La Osa in 1991. She worked in that capacity until 1993, at which time she joined Alvarez & Alvarez-Zane.
