Judge Ayana N. Harris - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Ayana N. Harris is a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court in Florida. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on December 16, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Samuel J. Slom.

Harris earned a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Miami in 1998. She then completed a J.D. at Howard University School of Law in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Harris began her legal career as an assistant public defender in the Office of the Public Defender for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. She served in that capacity until 2008, at which time she became an assistant federal public defender for the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Miami.

Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Dade County Bar Association, the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association, and the History Miami’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit Historical Society.

She is a recipient of the Unsung Hero Award from the City of North Miami Beach (2021).

Harris was a resident of Hialeah, Florida, at the time of her appointment. When not presiding over legal proceedings, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and three children.
