Hon. Arthur M. Birken (Ret.) was a judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Broward County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bob Martinez in 1988. Birken retired in 2016 and continued to preside as a senior judge.
Prior to his appointment, he was a judge for the Broward County Court since 1982. Before that, he was the city attorney for the City of Tamarac, a position to which he was named in 1978.
Birken received a B.A. from New York University in 1970. He then completed a J.D. at American University, Washington College of Law in 1973.
Shortly after graduating from law school, he briefly served as assistant general counsel for the Office of General Counsel in Broward County (1975 to 1976) as well as an assistant city attorney for the City of Hallandale Beach (1976 to 1978).
His memberships included the Fort Lauderdale Try Center, the Bnai Brith Justice Unit #3126, and the Jewish Community Center of Fort Lauderdale.
Birken was born in Newburgh, New York.
