The Hon. Andra L. Ackerman is a judge for the Cohoes City Court in the Third Judicial District of New York. She was appointed to the bench by Mayor Shawn Morse in 2016.
Ackerman received her bachelor’s degree from Siena College. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University at Buffalo Law School in 1999.
Prior to her appointment to the City Court, Ackerman had worked as a Special Victims Unit supervisor with the District Attorney’s Offices in Rensselaer, Albany, Schenectady, Erie, and Monroe Counties for eight years. Before that, she served as an assistant district attorney in those counties.
Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Ackerman served as the Director with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Office of Human Trafficking Prevention and Policy.
During her tenure on the bench, Judge Ackerman is credited with establishing the United Against Crime-Community Action Network (U-CAN). The court-based program pairs mentors with troubled young defendants, and it is being used as a model in other courts across New York.
