The Hon. Alan D. Clemmons is the master-in-equity for the Horry County Equity Court in South Carolina. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Henry McMaster in 2022, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Cynthia Graham Howe.
Prior to his appointment, Clemmons was a managing attorney at the Clemmons Law Firm, a practice he established in 2005. The firm handled transactional, business, administration, and regulatory matters in Myrtle Beach. Clemmons supplemented his practice with service as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives (2002 to 2020). In that capacity, he garnered international attention for denying the State of Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank, successfully sponsoring a bill that has rendered it illegal for public entities to do business with companies that participate in the BDS Movement (2015).
Clemmons earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Coastal Carolina University in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 1989.
After graduating from law school, Clemmons began his legal career as an associate at McCrackin, Barnett & Richardson. During his tenure there, he specialized in real estate transactions, rising through the ranks to become a named partner in 1993.
His memberships have included the Board of the South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office and the Board of the South Carolina Bureau of Economic Advisors. He has also been involved with the Horry County Bar Association, the Horry County Planning Commission, the Chicora Rotary Club, the South Carolina I-73 Association,
He is a recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award from the American Legislative Exchange Council (2020), the Aaron Solomon Award for Service to Humanity from Brith Shalom Beth Israel Congregation (2018), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Jewish Congress (2018), and the Defender of Freedom Award from the Center for Security Policy (2016).
Born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Clemmons served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern Mexico. He and his wife, Laura, have two children.
He is registered as a Republican.
