Judge Sylvia G. Ash - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Sylvia G. Ash is a Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the 2nd Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 2011. Justice Ash was originally elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York, Kings County in 2005. While on the Supreme Court, Justice Ash has also served as the Presiding Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Commercial Division.

She is registered as a Democrat.

Justice Ash received her B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1978. She went on to earn her J.D. from Howard University School of Law in 1984.

After graduating from law school, Ash began a year-long clerkship with the Hon. Dennis J. Brathwaite of the New Jersey Superior Court, Chancery Division in 1984. Then, in 1985, Ash became a staff attorney for the District Council 37’s legal department in Manhattan, where she was assigned to the Family Law Unit. During her tenure there, Ash would matriculate through the ranks, becoming a senior attorney in the Real Estate Unit in 1992. She would then return to the Family Law Unit in 2001, where she served as a supervising attorney. During that time, Ash also served as chief counsel for the Immigration Program at District Council 37 and would hold her positions there until her election to the bench in 2005.

Justice Ash has served as an executive committee member of the New York State Bar Association, and a master in the Kings County American Inns of Court. She has served on the board of directors of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert, the St. Gabriel’s Senior Center and the Judicial Friends Association. Her other memberships have included the Kings County Supreme Court Board of Justices, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc, the Columbian Lawyers Association, and the National Association of Women Judges.

Justice Ash was born in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, though she was raised in England. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was seventeen years old.

Justice Ash is an avid New York Giants fan. Her other hobbies include reading mystery novels and traveling.
