Judge Robert F. Diaz: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Robert F. Diaz is a judge for the Broward County Court in Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Lawton Chiles in 1992.

Diaz earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Florida International University in 1980. He then completed a J.D. at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law, in 1984. As a law student, he clerked at Rojas & Reinstein (1983) and Florida Indian Legal Services (1983 to 1984).

After graduating from law school, Diaz began his legal career as an assistant public defender in the Office of the Public Defender for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit. He served in that capacity until his appointment to the bench.

His memberships have included the Executive Board of the Stephen R. Booher American Inn of Court. He has also been involved with the Broward Homeless Outreach Center and Broward Young Lawyers for Literacy.

He is a recipient of the Harvey Ford Award from the Florida Conference of County Court Judges (2017), the Outstanding Service Award from the Broward County Bar Association (2017), and the Judge of the Year Award from the Florida Law Related Education Committee of the Florida Bar (1996).

Raised in South Florida, Diaz attended Hialeah High School. He identifies as having Cuban ancestry.
