Judge Michael G. Kaplan: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Michael G. Kaplan is a judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Broward County. He was elected to the bench in 2002.

Kaplan has held an assignment in the Domestic Violence Division, serving as the Domestic Violence Chairperson.

Prior to his election, Kaplan was a general master for the 17th Judicial Circuit since 1995. He came to the position after serving as a partner at McFann, Beavers & Kaplan (1990 to 1995). He also practiced briefly as an attorney at the Law Office of Robert J. McFann (1989 to 1990) and Spellacy & McFann (1984 to 1989).

He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Miami in 1980. Kaplan then completed a J.D. at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law, in 1984.

Kaplan spent time as a volunteer moot court judge and a volunteer Family Clinic judge and sat as a member of the Board of Directors of the B'nai B'rith Justice Unit.
