Judge Judy H. Kim - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Judy H. Kim is a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in New York County. She was elected to the bench on November 8, 2016, becoming the first Korean American elected to the New York State Unified Court System.

At the time of her election, Kim was designated to the Criminal Court of the City of New York (New York County) bench by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. She presided in that capacity until 2019, at which time she was designated back to the Civil Court of the City of New York. Then, in 2022, she was named acting justice of the New York County Supreme Court.

Prior to her election, Kim was associate counsel with the New York Liquidation Bureau, a position to which she was named in 2008. In that capacity, she held assignments in the Bureau and Estates Litigation Section. Kim supplemented her practice with service as a volunteer attorney at the City Bar Association’s Monday Night Law Clinic in Harlem and the Open Hands Legal Clinic in the Lower East Side.

Kim graduated with a B.A. in American history and political science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. She went on to earn a J.D. from Tulane Law School in 1998.

After graduating from law school, Kim began her legal career as associate counsel with the maritime and admiralty law firm of Kennedy, Lillis, Schmidt, and English. She remained with the firm for two years, eventually leaving to join Snitow, Kanfer, Holtzer, and Millus, where she practiced commercial litigation, employment discrimination, and matrimonial matters until 2008.

Her memberships have included the Executive Committee of the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert, the Board of Governors of the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York, and the Diversity Committee of The Spence School. She has also been involved with the Korean Bar Association, the Korean American Community Foundation, and the Stonewall Community Development Corporation.

Born in New York, Kim was raised in Kips Bay, a neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan.
