Judge Joseph E. Lamendola - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Joseph E. Lamendola is a justice of the Onondaga County Supreme Court in the Fifth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Lamendola also served as an acting village justice for the Canton Village Court from 2000 to 2005.

He received a B.A. in political science from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1978. Lamendola went on to complete an LL.B. (1982) from Cardiff University and an LL.M. (1983) in admiralty law from Tulane University School of Law.

After law school, he received an officers commission and served as a Staff Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force from 1984 to 1988. During that time, Lamendola was stationed at Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina. After completing his active duty, he transferred to the New York Air National Guard, where he continued to serve with the 174th Attack Wing and Headquarters NYANG for twenty-six years. At retirement, Lamendola held the rank of full colonel.

He began his civilian legal career with the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office in 1988, where he served as a senior assistant district attorney. Lamendola then became a corporation counsel with the Department of Law for the City of Syracuse in 1995 and remained in that capacity until 1999.

Prior to joining the bench, Lamendola was a sole practitioner at his own private practice. As such, he handled family law, business litigation, estate planning, education law, and military law matters. In addition, he served as general counsel to the Empire State Supervisors and Administrators Association (2009 to 2019), where he was tasked with representing public education unions and public school administrators in contract negotiations, grievances, and unfair labor practices before the New York State Public Employment Relations Board.

Lamendola also served as an external director at the Veterans’ Clinic of Syracuse University Law Center, where he provided legal assistance to veterans in need of assistance in filing VA benefits and was an arbitrator for the Attorney-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program in the Fifth Judicial District.

He served on the Appellate Division, Fourth Department Grievance Committee (chairman) and the United States Service Academy Nominating Committee.

He was on the board of directors of the Onondaga County Bar Foundation and the Onondaga County Bar Association.
